Dubai reception desk
The Dubai Reception Desk was created for Dubai Design District in 2019 and marks an important step in After-Form's development of parametric furniture. It was the first project in which we produced a parametric object entirely from tightly placed plywood sections, with no gaps between them. This changed the character of the piece completely. Instead of reading as an open ribbed structure, the desk became a dense sculptural volume, almost like a carved architectural form made from many precise layers.
The object was finished with gold paint, which gave the plywood construction a warmer and more iconic presence. The color amplified the flowing geometry and helped the desk stand out within the interior, especially against polished flooring, warm lighting and the surrounding architectural finishes. The gold surface made the object feel less like conventional reception furniture and more like a sculptural centerpiece for the entrance zone.
The form itself is built around a continuous wave. The front edge folds and rises, creating a sense of movement around the point of reception. Because the plywood sections are placed tightly together, the desk has a more solid and luxurious reading than earlier open-rib parametric pieces. At the same time, the layered construction remains visible through the rhythm of the sections, so the viewer can still understand how the form was generated and assembled.
For Dubai Design District, this was especially appropriate. The area is associated with design, architecture and creative industries, so the reception desk needed to do more than perform a service function. It had to make a statement about material experimentation and contemporary fabrication. The piece turns the reception point into a spatial landmark: a place where visitors immediately encounter the design identity of the interior.
For architects, designers and developers, the project shows how a functional object can become a strong architectural feature. The desk organizes the entrance area, creates a memorable first impression and demonstrates the possibilities of parametric plywood construction at an interior scale. Its importance is not only in the final image, but also in the technical step it represented for the studio: a move from ribbed openness toward a dense, seamless, sculptural parametric volume.
